The Eglesfield Musical Society (Queen's)

Founded in 1842 by William Thomson, The Eglesfield Musical Society is the oldest music society in Oxford and is based at The Queen's College. It is named after the College's founder, Robert de Eglesfield. EMS runs both a weekly organ recital and a Saturday recital series, featuring both top-tier student musicians and professionals. Week-to-week in college, we run an unauditioned orchestra and an A Capella group, which perform in our termly concerts, as well as a Jazz band (Off-key) which perform at our termly jazz open mic night, "Fifth-week Blues". The highlight of the EMS calendar is the annual garden musical which takes place in Trinity Term - last year's being the immensely successful "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee". Other events include musical theatre concerts, chamber music concerts, and regular socials. Overall, EMS aims to be an inclusive, university-wide society, providing abundant performance and leadership opportunities. We try to facilitate both relaxed and high-level music-making, giving a place for musicians of all abilities and styles to flourish.
