About OUMS

The Oxford University Music Society has been the heart of the music scene in Oxford since its foundation in 1872. Today, we are the umbrella organisation of nine diverse ensembles, holding central auditions each term. We seek to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of music in Oxford through the coordination and promotion of these groups, which includes our Chamber Music Society. OUMS’ support of future journalists (with our society publication, OPUS, being the pinnacle of music journalism in Oxford), composers (we run two annual composition competitions), and conductors (across our ensembles, there are nine OUMS Conductor posts) continues. Our Access & Outreach programme is continuously expanding, and members have recently performed in care homes and hosted pre-concert ‘Meet the Instrument’ sessions for young people.

Our weekly newsletter informs subscribers of upcoming musical events and opportunities, as well as featuring an interview with an Oxford-based musician each week. Society social events have returned for the first time since 2017: we are keen to continue to promote a thriving musical community,  contributing to the well-being of musicians within Oxford.
