Oxford University String Orchestra
A relaxed and social string orchestra

About us
We are an unauditioned string orchestra open to all string players throughout the year! We pride ourselves on having a relaxed and social atmosphere in the orchestra, with established traditions like Taylor's breakfast socials and trips to Sainsbury's for meal deals during rehearsal breaks. We explore a wide range of string repertoire, including contemporary, film scores, and pop arrangements. Last year, we experimented with bold and contemporary works such as Yasushi Akutagawa's Triptych for String Orchestra, Ruth Gipps' Kensington Gardens Suite, and Errollyn Wallen's Photography, as well as a range of student compositions. This year, our new principal conductor Otto has ambitious plans to explore both large romantic works (Sibelius Romance in C major op. 42, Mendelssohn String Symphony no. 1 in C major) as well as collaboration opportunities with pianists (Shostakovich Piano Concerto no. 1 in C minor op. 35) and big bands (Duke Ellington Solitude string arrangement and more). In addition to our termly concerts at big venues, we are traditionally invited to play at the yearly Lincoln College garden party in Trinity term, which is as much an opportunity to enjoy the party itself as it is to play. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you are looking to join OUSO or have any questions!
