About us
We are an unauditioned string orchestra open to all string players throughout the year! We pride ourselves on having a welcoming social environment whilst still achieving a high level of music making. OUSO is younger than other OUMS ensembles and we have a fresh and exciting atmosphere which really lends itself to the music we play. The string orchestra medium is home to some of the most interesting and dynamic repertoire there out there, which are committed to showcasing in our concerts. We are known for our great programs; last year's highlights include Akutagawa's Triptych for String Orchestra as part of our 'Winter in Japan' concert, and Gipps's Kensington Gardens Suite for 'Old Landscapes, New Voices', in addition to some great student compositions. On the cards for this year are concertos, a collaboration with OUBB, and even the potential for a tour as we continue to sell out concerts in great venues around Oxford from University Church to the Sheldonian Theatre. Joining OUSO is as simple as turning up (and turning up again)! - whilst ability ranges quite a bit throughout the ensemble, we expect roughly a Grade 7 standard or more.

What's the rehearsal schedule?
11am-2pm every Sunday of term in the Schwarzman Centre Recital Hall
Where and when do you perform?
We usually perform in week 8 of each term. In the past, we have used venues like Christ Church Cathedral, University Church and St Peter's Chapel.
What's the conductor like?
Otto is an experienced 2nd year conductor who very excited about growing OUSO as an ensemble. He is committed to exploring interesting non-canonic repertoire and his rehearsal style is focused and engaging while remaining fun and stress-free. At OUSO, you can have your cake and eat it too! Otto also co-conducts the Fidelio Orchestra based at Merton (mega-cool non-OUMS ensemble if you're interested)
Otto will be working with our Deputy Conductor, to be auditioned in Michaelmas week 1.
Do you audition?
No, OUSO is unauditioned. Section leaders, however, are auditioned through OUMS in Michaelmas and subject to termly review.
