About us
The Oxford University Philharmonia was founded in 1992 and ever since it has been both run and conducted entirely by students. OUPhil has a highly sociable and friendly atmosphere, and we are committed to highlighting some of the greatest musicians at our university.
Each Hilary term, OUPhil includes a solo concerto in our programme. Auditions for the soloist take place in Michaelmas and performances are of an extremely high standard, from Gershwin's electric Piano Concerto to Rodrigo's magical Concerto de Aranjuez. A new conductor takes office in Trinity term, with auditions for leader taking place in 0th week of Michaelmas.
We regularly perform large-scale symphonic works, with concerts in the past two years featuring Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, music from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Dvorak's Ninth Symphony.

What's the rehearsal schedule?
Wednesday 7-10pm, with the occasional weekend sectionals on a Saturday morning
Where and when do you perform?
Typically Wednesday of 7th week at the Sheldonian Theatre
What's the conductor like?
George is an experienced, yet fun and easy-going conductor. Rehearsals with him are a collaborative experience in which the orchestra makes fast progress while also enjoying the process!
Do you audition?
Yes, through the central OUMS auditions
