Oxford University String Ensemble
Manager: Cathryn Head
Do you audition?
We are a non-auditioned ensemble. Anyone is welcome, regardless of ability or experience!
What is the usual rehearsal schedule?
We rehearse every Sunday, 11am-2pm. As well as this everyone is invited to socials! We normally do a pub trip after every concert, and this year we have plans
to do an Orchestra Crew date at some point!
What's the conductor like?
This year’s principal conductor is music student Tom Kirby, who is continuing after having been assistant conductor last year. He will be assisted by fellow music student Oli Spooner. Both conductors are committed to performing a wide variety of repertoire that is fun and ambitious but not overly demanding.
When do you perform?
We have one termly concert, usually on the weekend of 7th week. In Trinity term we push our concert date forward to 5th or 6th week to allow our student musicians to
focus on their exams.
Where can I buy tickets for the next concert?
Keep an eye on our socials!
OUSE is a very friendly, non-auditioned string ensemble that exists to show Oxford that string orchestras are capable of a lot more than one might originally think, whilst having a great deal of fun along the way. We are student conducted, and play concerts in venues around Oxford, most recently in the Holywell Music Room, and in the University Church in Michaelmas 2024. Our repertoire is really varied, from staples by Corelli and Warlock, to our annual composition competition, to music by Anna Clyne and Dobrinka Tabakova. We would love for you to come and join us at our rehearsals, no matter your ability or experience!
